A Different Kind of News Item About the Da Vinci Code

I haven't read the Da Vinci Code, and don't intend to, but I've certainly read enough about it. Now I've just come across a sad story connected to the book, far-removed from the current courtroom saga. A well-known Welsh monk who suffered from depression has committed suicide, and there's speculation that the trigger was the Da Vinci Code's theory of a conspiracy that the Church covered up the true facts of Jesus' life. Hello, I was shocked by your blog posting, so I read the newspaper article you link to. I found it completely speculative. There is one person quoted as suspecting that DVC was the trigger of this poor person's suicide. It is also said that the person tried to commit suicide before. Am I alone in thinking this is a nasty, opportunistic piece of reporting with no basis in fact? What was the point of it?

I second Maxine's observations.

I think the point of the story is the impact that a novel—any novel—can have a profound impact on its readers; the report says that a novel triggered the depression which ultimately resulted in the suicide. You're right, though, the theory that it's the Da Vinci Code is presented as speculation in the piece.
